The Acai berry grows wild as there are no commercially cultivated crops. The Acai date palm berry or Acai berry is harvested by hand. It requires both agility and strength to climb the Acai palm to complete the harvest. A harvest of the berry begins early in the dark hours of the morning because the Acai berry is so delicate and requires a speedy and timely harvest to prevent spoilage. A harvester will use a small rope loop that he wraps around his feet after straddling the base of the tree. Then using the rope loop on his feet gains leverage that allows him to shinny up the tree to the top where the Acai berry grows.
