Muscle growth, or hypertrophy, occurs most readily in one of the body’s most adaptable types of tissue – skeletal muscle. A complex set of biological processes involving various cellular parts (‘organelles’) and hormone, or hormone-like, growth factors that stimulate them, provides all the elements necessary to fuel muscle growth. Only recently has a better understanding of this intricate chain of events emerged, although the issue has been widely explored for many years.
