The East has long beguiled the West. To that point, as a tremendous fan — and practitioner — of yoga, I cannot help but think our cultural preoccupation with all things Asian, or South Asian in this case, is not some manifestation of a kind of Orientalism. This is not to say that there are not inherently valuable practices we can appropriate, but when yoga studios are as ubiquitous as martial arts studios used to be, one can’t help but wonder as to whether or not this is just some kind of fitness fad.

For a boy whose favorite pastime was watching the telly, it seems absurd that now, approaching 40, that I cannot abide a day without some form of rigorous exercise. Yes, I was a portly lad who was fond of Toblerones and Lion Bars. To be sure, I would go as far out of my way as possible to avoid the football field or the gymnasium. But, of course, middle age has a way of making it worth your while to stay alive. Hence, I now endeavor to stay active.
