Coffee shops have a history which goes back over five hundred years, from times when the idea of human beings congregating was enough to put a fright in autocratic rulers. Reports still exist of Imams sending subjects to find out about the happenings in a Mecca cafes in the early 1500s. A few hundred years later, coffee shops were still giving kings sleepless nights. In England, the monarch tried to start a smear campaign to get citizens to ignore the rumblings in London coffee houses. Coffee shops continued to dominate culture in the 1960s, when folk singers like Bob Dylan brought their protests to Greenwich Village coffee houses in New York. It?s been a long time, yet coffee shops may be popular like never before.

One of the best ways that travelers get acquainted with the local customs is by stopping into a cafe–any cafe, really–and sitting down for a coffee. It could be early in the morning, right as shops and markets are starting to open. It could be during a slow afternoon stretch where businessmen are having power lunches and ladies of leisure are gossiping. We wake up each morning and inevitably grab a mug of coffee before heading out the door. It’s become our de facto fuel. These days it’s become the norm to make a stop at the local java shop for a grande triple shot latte with sugar free vanilla flavoring. Coffee has become a staple for the morning.
